Instructions

    • 1

Find a good location for your hunting blind. Be aware of deer trails, primary wind direction and the position of the sun. Tucking the blind into some natural cover can increase its effectiveness. Measure the space you will have to work with once you decide on a location.

Determine whether you want a roof. You'll be nailing four square walls together to form a box, and the blind can have a roof. A roof will give you added shelter and darken the inside of the blind concealing you better. The roof can be constructed of 2-inch by 4-inch boards, just like the walls. A piece of roofing metal or wood sheeting will also work.

    • 3

Decide whether you want to be able to stand inside your blind. Most people are comfortable shooting from a sitting position.

    • 4

Line up your 2-inch by 4-inch boards. A wall will consist of 2-by-4 studs placed every 16 inches, and a top and bottom 2-by-4 plate. For example, a 6-foot by 6-foot blind would have four walls measuring 6 feet each at whatever height you have decided. Lay two 6-foot studs out on the floor. One will be the top plate and the other the bottom. Now using a circular saw cut two boards the length of your desired height and place them on the ends of the top and bottom plates to form a square. Using nails and a hammer to fasten the four boards together.

    • 5

Cut enough boards to place studs every 16 inches, starting from one of the end boards. In this case you would need four studs to fill in the square. They will need to be the same length as the end boards you cut. Nail all of the studs in place. Build three more walls identical to the first one.

    • 6

Using 1/2 inch plywood sheeting, cut four square pieces with the circular saw the same dimensions as each wall. Nail the sheeting to the outside of all four walls. Decide where you would like the windows and cut them out of the sheeting using the saw. Also remember to cut an entry point so you can enter and exit the deer blind easily and quietly.

    • 7

Paint the outside of the walls with camouflage colors such as brown, green or blacks. Use flat paint to eradicate any shine or glare. Use flat black to paint the inside of the walls. After transporting the walls to your desired location, stand the walls up and nail them together to form the box blind.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use treated lumber to deter bugs from eating the wood. Substitute 3 inch screws for the nails so the blind can be taken apart easily at the end of the season. To reinforce the window holes, cut a 2-by-4 top and bottom plate for each window and nail in place. Hang camouflage netting on the inside of the windows for more concealment.

  • Be careful not to cut into the 2 by 4's while cutting window holes in the plywood sheeting because that could jeopardize the integrity of the blind. Wear safety glasses and ear plugs during construction.
