How to Connect an External DSL Modem to a Hub
A hub is a simple device that is used to spread a signal over more than one wire and allow access to specific resources for additional devices. A hub requires no programming or set up. Connecting an external DSL modem to a hub, and then connecting additional computers to the hub, will allow those additional computers access to the DSL modem and whatever other resources that the DSL modem has access to, such as the Internet.

1
Set up the external DSL modem. Be sure the DSL modem is working correctly with one computer before you attempt to add additional computers to your setup. Locate the DSL modem where there are enough power outlets to also plug in the hub.
-
2
Plug in and install the hub. Be sure the hub is in a location where cables can reach from the hub to the DSL modem and from the hub to other computers. The hub does not need to be near the DSL modem as long as a network cable can reach from the hub to the DSL modem.

3
Attach one end of a network cable to the DSL modem. Most DSL modems will have only one jack in the back that will accept a network cable.
-
4
Attach the other end of the network cable to a port in the hub. Since the device is just a hub, it does not matter which of the ports you use on the device.
-
5
Attach your computer and other devices to the hub using additional network cables. Use any of the ports on the hub; it will not make any difference which ports you use.

Tips & Warnings
If you are using a router instead of a hub, it will make a difference which port you use on the hub. If you are unsure of which device you have, use the "Uplink" or "Internet" port on the device to connect to the DSL modem.
