How to Camp in an SUV

The SUV is ever-popular because of its ability to go where other vehicles can't. Its size and comfort make it the perfect choice for outdoor adventuring. However, when you go camping, know how to maximize the inherent features of your SUV to take full advantage of its capabilities. Camping out no longer has to be limited to fair-weather occasions. The SUV can make any weekend a chance to get away from the grind and enjoy some time with your family in the great outdoors.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the SUV on good, level ground and in the shade, if possible. Trying to camp at an angle can be frustrating, especially when trying to prepare food or drinks. Also, shade is preferable during summer camping because the inside of the SUV can become unpleasantly hot because of the magnifying effects of the sun through the windshield and windows.

    • 2

Open up the back hatch and run a tarp with poles directly out from it. This will give you a pavilion area where you can sit around in folding chairs while still remaining within easy reach of equipment you keep in the SUV.

    • 3

Station your bedding in the forward portion of the SUV interior so that the items most commonly used during the day are available at the back entrance. Because the heaviest traffic will be at the rear of the vehicle to get common supplies, people who might sleep late can do so undisturbed.

    • 4

Set up large water cans with nozzles at a 90-degree angle and overlapping the outer edge of the vehicle's rear so that it can be easily used as a hand and dishwashing area. This will make getting water only a matter of pressing a button instead of wrestling a heavy and awkward water reservoir.

    • 5

Build your campfire a safe distance away from your vehicle. A minimum safe distance is 50 feet. Fires too close to vehicles can lead to serious injury or even death.

    • 6

Place chock blocks under two of your tires to ensure the vehicle does not roll while it is parked. This will eliminate danger, even if the vehicle is accidentally put in neutral when campers get in and out.
