How to Rig a Fly Fishing Rod

A fly fishing rod in skilled hands can be poetry in motion. The floating line wafts overhead in a rhythmic motion until the angler drops the dry fly dead-center in a pool of still water, where a trout rises to investigate. The fly angler's skill depends to large degree on proper rigging of the line, leader, and taper material to which the fly is tied.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble the fly rod and align the line guides down to the rod tip.

    • 2

Attach the reel to the butt of the rod by turning the locknut on the back of the rod handle, then thread the thick fly line through the rod guides.

    • 3

Tie a leader to the main line using a nail knot (see illustration linked in the Reference section). Leader lengths vary based on water clarity and other fishing conditions, with 8 feet the average length.

    • 4

Tie a tippet to the leader using a surgeon's loop knot, linked in the Reference section.

    • 5

Use a clinch knot to tie on a fly to the end of the tippet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Dip the knot in water before tightening to create a stronger bond, then slowly pull the ends together to secure the knot.
