How to Use Curtains to Winterize the House
Drafts and cold air coming in through your doors and windows can sometimes make it seem as if winter has invaded the inside of your home. You turn the heat up to drive the chill away, but all you get is an increase in your energy bill. Instead of just suffering through the cold, install heavy curtains to keep the cold from coming in through old or uninsulated windows and doors. Heavy curtains are available at your local department store or other retail center. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Remove any curtains currently hanging over the window you need to insulate. Leave the curtain rod brackets in place. Wipe the window and frame with a clean rag or towel to remove any dust, dirt or debris.
-
2
Staple one or two panels of the heavy curtains to the trim surrounding the window so the panel(s) cover the entire window. Make sure the heavy curtains are tight around the window and no light is visible.
-
-
3
Hang the curtains you removed over the stapled heavy ones. Straighten the curtains so they are presentable in the room and so that the heavy curtains do not show.
-
4
Repeat steps for any other windows for which you need to install heavy curtains.
-
5
Staple one or two panels of heavy curtains to any doorways where drafts or cold air is entering the room or space. If the door/doorway is not used, staple all around the trim. If you need to exit from a particular door, hang the heavy curtains on a rod and install rod brackets to attach the curtain rod to the doorway trim. Repeat this step for other doorways you need to insulate.

Tips & Warnings
The room where the heavy curtains are installed will be dark. To lighten, keep a light available to turn on when in that room or area. If lighting is an issue, only install the heavy curtains on the coldest side of your house (usually the north side). Make sure you staple the heavy curtains to the window and not hang them on a rod. By stapling, there will no opening at the top of the window where cold air can flow out.
