Instructions

  1. Purchase a Domain Name

    • 1

Brainstorm a few possibilities for domain names that you would like to have: names relevant to your business or website theme.

    • 2

Search online at GoDaddy.com to see if your desired domain names are available. This step has a small fee.

    • 3

Select the best option for your domain name that is available for purchase. Prices vary, depending on whether you use ".com," ".info," or other choice.

    • 4

Follow the steps online to purchase your domain name.

    Start Your Website

    • 5

Send an email to post@posterous.com with the title of your first post in the subject line. In the body of your email, you can attach a photo or write a short entry for your website.

    • 6

Look out for the email that you will receive back. This has information for you to log in to www.posterous.com and manage your new account. Once your site is set up, click on "edit site."

    • 7

Configure your new site with your custom domain in the "edit settings." Before you can put in your domain name, your domain "records" must be modified. Follow the steps for doing this with GoDaddy.com given at posterous.com/help/custom_domain.

    • 8

Go back to your Posterous edit site settings and type your new domain name in the "custom domain name" box. Make sure to check the box below that says "verify name server" and click "save" at the bottom of the page.

Update your website by emailing post@posterous.com. You have the ability to attach many types of documents, audio files, images, and videos to your site. The site is free, and you can keep all types of media on the site. The only cost is the renewal of your domain name.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are other services that allow for free websites. Tumblr.com and Wordpress.com also offer free platforms for creating a website. Posterous.com is used in this example because of its ease of set-up and getting started.
