Listen and observe children carefully. Focus on what they are trying to say and correct them in a positive manner. Work with sounding out words and getting them to understand the differences with letters and sounds that often create problems. For example, "v" and "b" can often sound the same. Offer examples to children in regard to the areas that you observe them having problems with.

Work with flashcards. Toddlers can have more trouble than older children with understanding flashcards, but there are many types that exist that can help educate them. Buy flashcards with photo examples and vowel and consonant breakdowns and show children visual examples of what they are trying to say. Sound words out slowly and carefully.

Read to children as much as possible. Buy books with plenty of photos and encourage children to participate in the stories by asking them to say certain words. Involve children and make them feel as though they are telling the story to you. Boost their confidence by applauding and celebrating their efforts as they become more aware of how to sound out words that were once giving them trouble.
