Don’t throw out soap slivers. Extend the life of old soap pieces by creating soap filled sponges. It is an inexpensive project that allows you to recycle and reuse everyday household items. It is also a time saver. The project takes 5 to 10 minutes to complete. The best part about having a soap filled sponge is that you do not have to take the extra step of pouring costly liquid dish soap on the sponge to clean up spots. The pre-filled sponge provides cleaning convenience at your fingertips. So gather up your soap slivers and put them to good use.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Utility knife
  • Sponge
  • Soap slivers
  1. Step 1

Place a clean, dry rectangular-shaped sponge on a flat surface. You will be working with a sharp object, so it will be safer to work on a stable counter or table top. Make sure the wide side is face down.

  2. Step 2

Cut a slit into the middle of the sponge with a utility knife. The slit does not have to be precise. Just eyeball a relatively straight line. Insert the knife ¼ inch from the top edge and slide the knife down the surface to within ¼ inch of the bottom edge.

  3. Step 3

Wet the sponge with water to make it more pliable. Don’t forget to squeeze out the excess.

  4. Step 4

Tuck 2 to 3 soap slivers inside the opening. You may be able to get away with only using one large soap sliver, depending on the size.

  5. Step 5

Test out the sponge. Wet then squeeze the sponge to work up lather. The goal is to find out if there is enough soap in the pocket to effectively clean up spills. You may need to add more soap slivers.

  6. Step 6

Store the soap filled sponge in the kitchen or bathroom. You will be able to wipe down food or cosmetic stains in a jiff.

  7. Step 7

Refill the sponge with soap slivers as necessary. Add soap slivers continuously or wait until they dissolve in the sponge.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add a cord to a soap filled sponge by drilling or punching a hole in edge. Thread braided nylon cord through the hole. Gather the two ends of the nylon cord together and tie them in a knot. Voila, you have an easy way to hang your new soap filled sponge in a convenient spot.
  • Always exercise care when handling a utility knife. It is sharp and can cause injury.
