1
Purchase any regular beach umbrella. If you can, find one that is colorful so you will have less work to do. If you have an old one, that's fine too.
-
2
Purchase craft supplies (like ribbon and plastic flowers) or dig up any you may have lying around the house. To save money you can borrow things like the glue gun and hole puncher from friends or family.

3
Decide on a plan of action before you start decorating. This will ensure that your design is well executed and follows a theme.
-
4
Start with the painting (if you are using paint). Stencils are a great way to spread a unifying theme through the umbrella. For example, use a sun stencil in a bright color that contrasts with the color of your umbrella. Spray paint will work well for this.
-
5
Add ribbon to the edge of your umbrella by using the hole puncher. Simply punch holes a few inches apart all around the bottom edge of the umbrella. Weave a brightly colored piece of ribbon (with a few inches of extra length) in and out of the holes and tie the end into a bow.

6
Use your hot glue gun to adhere tropical plastic flowers to the umbrella. Spread the flowers out enough so that they don't overwhelm the design.

7
Use ribbon or stickers to decorate the pole. Put a dot of hot glue at the bottom of the pole and attach the end of your ribbon there; then, wrap the ribbon up the pole and do the same once you reach the top. Or, place themed stickers of your choice up the pole but don't do both at the same time.

Tips & Warnings
Get your kids involved by allowing them to place stickers on the pole.
Be careful when handling the hot glue gun and never allow a child to use it.
Allow the glue and paint to dry completely before taking your umbrella out in the sun or the glue may run and the paint can be smeared if the umbrella is folded.
