Heartburn symptoms are, for many, more than just an occasional uncomfortable condition. If you've ever had to suffer through numerous or recurring bouts of this burning and often painful condition then you know that every trick helps. Here you will find a few suggestions to help keep those symptoms at bay.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Watch what you eat and drink to help ease your symptoms of heartburn. This calls for avoiding spicy foods (i.e. onions, peppers, hot sauces & spices), caffeine, alcohol, acidic fruits and vegetables as well as acidic juices or other drinks.

  2. Step 2

Avoid laying down shortly after meal time to help ease and avoid heartburn symptoms. If you lie down too quickly your food will not have had the proper amount of time to fully digest and therefore stomach acid will more likely be a problem triggering heartburn. So avoid eating for at least a couple of hours prior to lying down.

  3. Step 3

Elevate your upper body while lying down to avoid heartburn symptoms. By elevating your "upper torso" (not simply your neck and head) you will have gravity on your side and will decrease the likelihood of acid reflux and assist you in minimizing your heartburn symptoms.

  4. Step 4

Take something for it before it occurs if it is a recurring issue. There are many over-the-counter medications and supplements that claim to stop heartburn symptoms before they arise. Taking one of these prior to eating may help ease that uncomfortable burn.

  5. Step 5

Talk to your doctor if your conditions worsens or your symptoms of heartburn persist as it may require a prescription strength medication or be indicative of a more serious condition.
