The American with Disabilities Act of 1990 requires businesses to follow certain rules in regard to disabled Americans. According to the ADA, when a business in Texas re-stripes a parking lot, it must provide accessible parking spaces as required by certain standards for accessible design. • Pavement marking equipment
• Spray paint
• Tape measure
• Level or laser

Instructions

1. Measure the space. Access aisle for a standard car must be at least 60 inches wide.

2. Use level or laser to verify that the space is level. A maximum slope of 1:50 in each direction is allowed.

3. Depending upon the number of spaces you have available in your lot, at least one must be van-accessible. The required measurements for van accessibility in Texas parking lots are 96 inches wide; this size can accommodate a wheelchair lift.

4. Van-accessible handicapped parking spaces in Texas must be measured for vertical clearance as well. Van height will differ by model, but the average height is 72 inches.

5. Both car and van parking spaces must be the same length as adjacent parking spaces.

6. The parking spaces must connect to an accessible building route. Two spaces may share an access aisle.
