Things You'll Need:
-
Step 1
Click the Windows "Start" button and select "All Programs." In the list of programs, select "Accessories" and then select "System Tools." Finally, select "System Information" from the list of tools.
-
Step 2
Click the plus sign that is located next to the "Components" icon. This opens a list of hardware components on the machine, including the sound card.
-
Step 3
Scroll down the list of components to the sound card. If one does not exist, you won't see a sound card listed. However, if there is a sound card available, right-click the icon and select "Properties."
-
Step 4
View the properties for the sound card. Windows indicates problems or conflicts with sound cards using a yellow exclamation point. If the sound card is running properly, it's displayed in this window as "This device is running properly."
-
Step 1
Open the computer case using the screwdriver. The case is usually fastened with screws in the back of the machine. Ensure that the computer is turned off when opening the case.
-
Step 2
View the component inserted into the slots on the motherboard. A sound card is quickly identified by the large, black, round capacitors that are on the circuit board. An example of what the capacitors look like is displayed in the image.
-
Step 3
View the back of the sound card. To verify that you have found the sound card, look in the back of the card and identify the available ports. Sound cards are usually color coded with images that identify where the speakers need to be placed. This is also a good way to recognize the sound card in a computer.
