How to Avoid the Elliptical Machine

The elliptical machine is a useful and safe machine for aerobic exercise. Many exercisers, especially beginners or those with hip or knee problems, enjoy using the elliptical because it is low impact and simple to use.

Unfortunately, relying on one type of exercise or machine to make up your entire fitness routine is a bad idea. Not only does it inspire boredom, which will make sticking to a program more difficult, it can create overuse injuries and prevent you from continuing to improve your fitness level

Instructions

    • 1

Decide why you like using the elliptical machine. Is it because you have knee problems and it is low impact? It is because it is easier than other machines? Is it out of mere habit? Does it best allow you to read or watch TV while you are on it?

Understanding why you always choose this particular machine will help you make a plan to avoid it.

    • 2

Try out different machines. Go to the gym and try different machines for 15 minutes each. Try the machine at a low difficultly level to allow yourself time to become used to it. Discover which ones you like best, and use those in Step 3

    • 3

Make a weekly fitness plan. Start the week by making a schedule of what you will do for exercise each day. Often people will stick to one machine or routine because they don't think ahead and plan to do something else. You don't have to do something completely different each day, but try to pick at least three different workouts to alternate throughout the week. Add the machines you preferred in Step 2 into your plan.

    • 4

Add one new thing each month. This will give you time to adjust to each new addition and continue to expand your abilities and choices when you go to the gym.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hiring a personal training is an option if you don't feel comfortable planning things on your own.

  • Do not add to much too soon. New exercises or machines will be harder at first, so let your body adapt slowly and be careful to not overdo it.
