A homemade knife block offers home cooks a safe and accessible way to store knives, and can be a great gift. Store-bought knife blocks may not offer the right slots for your knives. When you make knife blocks, you can be sure everything fits properly since you are carving out the slots yourself. This knife block is designed to sit on the counter and includes optional instructions for a skid-free backing.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Block of maple wood
  • Sandpaper
  • Strong glue
  • Clamps
  • Measuring tape
  • Wood chisel
  • Hand saw
  • Pencil
  1. Step 1

Using the measuring tape and pencil, measure and then cut the maple block into two pieces with the saw. You should cut a primary block that measures 55 inches x 5 ¼ inches x ¾ inch and a primary block end that measures 12 inches x 5 ¼ inches x ½ inch.

  2. Step 2

Divide the primary block into five equal pieces measuring 11 inches x 5 ¼ inch x ¾ inch using the measuring tape, pencil and saw.

  3. Step 3

Carve out slots for your knives in the center of each of the five blocks, using the wood chisel. Check the width of slots using your knives to be certain they fit before proceeding.

  4. Step 4

Glue together each of the five block panels in whatever order you desire. Glue the primary block end onto the bottom of the block panels, so that the ends you have carved knife slots into are exposed.

  5. Step 5

Place a clamp binding the primary block end to the main block by centering the clamp on the seam between the two blocks. Clamp the primary block widthwise and let the clamps dry overnight before continuing.

  6. Step 6

Remove the clamps and visually inspect the knife block. Use the sandpaper to sand any rough corners or excess glue.

Tips & Warnings
  • Glue a piece of rubber or felt on the underside of your wood block to stabilize it and create a skid-free surface. You can stain your knife block if you wish.
  • Be sure to purchase a strong glue that works on wood. Knife blocks should always be made from a hard wood such as maple, since soft wood is more likely to chip at the slots.
