How to Change the Phone Number Shown on Caller ID

Caller ID is a common service that lets the people you call know who's calling them. Although there are methods for making it so no number is shown, changing the digits that someone sees when you call requires using a company that offers this service. Fortunately, it's usually cheap, and you can often make the first call for free.

Instructions

1. Visit a website that offers a service to let you switch your caller ID numbers. An example is SpoofCard (See Resources).

2. On SpoofCard's website, input your number in the box labeled "Your Number" on the front page. Fill out "Your Friend's Number" and "Caller ID to Display," which can be any number. When ready, click "Place Free Call." Dial the number listed under "To connect just dial:" and the person you're calling will see the number you typed in, not your own. This free call is offered as a way for you to test the service.

3. Buy minutes on the site to get an ID PIN you can use if you want to make additional calls with a changed caller ID. Each time you call the number and input your PIN, you can designate a different caller ID to display.

• You can also download a program that lets you use SpoofCard more efficiently from your mobile phone.

• Although changing caller ID is legal for everyday use, it could be illegal to change your ID for certain official purposes.
