How to Add Web Pictures From Photoshop

When adding pictures to the web, be sure that those viewing your online pictures can enjoy them without experiencing long download times. The larger your picture, the longer it takes to download, especially for web visitors who still use a dial-up Internet service. By using an image editing program, such as Adobe Photoshop, you can easily edit your pictures so they are optimized for the web.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer with Internet access

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Photoshop program. Select "File" and "Open." Choose the location of the stored picture you want to place on the Internet. After choosing the picture, it appears in the Photoshop window for editing.

    • 2

Check the size of the image by right clicking on the image. Select "Properties." If the image size is over 20K or 400 x 400 pixels it can cause your web page to download slowly for site visitors who use slow Internet connections.

    • 3

Resize the image by selecting "Image" from the Photoshop menu bar. Select "Image Size." Now enter the desired pixel measurements for the image. Set the resolution to "72," which is the recommended DPI (dots per inch) for web pictures. Click "OK" to apply the changes.

    • 4

Sharpen your picture for the web by removing any blurriness you see. Do this by clicking on "Filter" from the Photoshop menu bar and selecting "Sharpen." A 50 to 100 percent increase in sharpness is good for website pictures.

    • 5

Save the optimized image as a ".JPEG" or ".GIF" file by clicking on "File" and "Save for Web." When saving the file, it is best to create a new file name to prevent overwriting your original image.

    • 6

Upload your pictures to the web. To do this, open the online program you want the pictures to display on, such as a slide show or personal website. Select the option to "Upload" images.
