How to Create Windows 2003 Certificates

Creating certificates on a Windows 2003 server ensures that encryption and security are implemented on the server. Client machines are able to access the web server using SSL, a security layer recognized by most people when they type in "https://" into their browsers. The server certificate is used to validate the server's security and implements encryption on the data sent between the client and the host.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows Start button and select "Control Panel." Double-click the "Administrative Tasks" icon, then double-click "Internet Information Services (IIS)." This is where the certificate is stored and configured. Right-click the web server's name and select "Properties."

    • 2

Click the "Directory Security" and find the "Secure communications" section. Click the button labeled "Server Certificate." A wizard dialog box is opened. Click the "Next" button at the opening screen to begin the certificate creation process.

    • 3

Select the "Create a new certificate" option and click the "Next" button. Select "Prepare the request now, but send it later" option and click the "Next" button.

    • 4

Enter the web server's certificate information. You can customize the bit length, but for most encryption schemes, the default of 1024 is sufficient. Enter a friendly name for the certificate and click the "Next" button.

    • 5

Enter the web server's information. This information includes the server's domain name and the organization. For instance, the domain name is entered as "domain.com" and the organization may be "My Business." Finally, enter the geographic location of the server. This includes country or province and city. Click the "Next" button.

    • 6

Select a location on the hard drive to save the newly created certificate and click "Save." The next two screens are summary and closing screens for the certificate creation process. Click "Next" and "Finish" on these pages. The certificate is now created for the web server.
