A Windows XP computer that is a part of a domain contains two passwords. The domain password is used to connect to the network. A local password is used to log in to the machine without connecting to the network. Both passwords are removed in the same manner.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Press the Ctrl, Alt and Delete keys all at the same time. This opens a Windows XP dialog screen with several options including a button to change the password.

  2. Step 2

Ensure that the computer is logged into the domain. Checked this by viewing the section labeled "Logon Information." In this section, the first line displays the user who is logged into the computer. The format for the information is "<domain>\<username>". If the domain is not shown, log off and log in again using the domain username.

  3. Step 3

Click the button labeled "Change Password." A screen is opened that asks for the old password and prompts you for a new password.

  4. Step 4

Enter the old password and leave the new password blank. This removes the domain password, and you will be able to access the domain with a blank password.

  5. Step 5

Click "OK" and reboot the machine. You can now log in to the domain with no password entered.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some network administrators require a password for the domain. If this restriction is set, you will be unable to remove the domain password.
