How to Change the Splash Screen Logo on a PC

The splash screen in Windows XP is the large Windows log that appears every time the computer is booted. The screen can be changed to a customized splash screen. Changing the splash screen in Windows requires an image in .bmp file format. If there's an image you would like on your splash screen, you can install it easily.

Instructions

    • 1

Save the .bmp file to the operating system directory. To do this, press the Windows "Start" button and select "Run." Enter "%systemroot%" into the text box and hit "Enter." This opens the Windows system directory. Save the .bmp file as "boot.bmp." It must be saved as this name for the Windows operating system to locate it.

    • 2

Navigate to the "C" drive to edit the boot.ini file. The boot.ini file is a text file that instructs the operating system where to find the boot information. This file points to the disk location of the operating system that loads on the hard drive. Editing this file changes the splash screen for the associated operating system the user chooses to load. The boot.ini file also decides if the default splash screen is shown. This file is always located on the root of the hard drive. Double-click on the file to open it in Notepad.

    • 3

Find the line of the boot.ini file that begins with "multi(0)disk(0)." The boot.ini file is a very small text file, so it's just a few lines down from the beginning of the file.

    • 4

Add the text "/noguiboot /bootlogo" to the end of the line in the boot.ini file indicated in Step 3. This indicates to the operating system not to load the system splash screen.

    • 5

Save the boot.ini file and reboot the machine to verify the changes worked. Once the operating system loads, the splash screen should show the newly saved .bmp file instead of the typical Windows logo.
