How to Purchase Window Tint Online

For those who live in warmer climates, applying window tint to your residential windows makes good sense because it increases energy efficiency and lowers utility costs. Window tint can block out at least 50 percent of the summer heat, reduce solar gain, enhance privacy and protect your interiors from harmful UV radiation. Certain window films may also qualify for energy efficiency rebates and tax credits. Online retailers make it a snap to purchase window tint that is cut to your specifications. A few recommendations on how to purchase window tint online will help you get started.

1. Select an online retailer of window tint. WindowTint.com and SnapTint.com are two examples that offer custom pre-cut sizes. If you prefer a particular brand, their websites will specify how to order their products. Some will let you purchase directly from their website while others will refer you to suppliers.

2. Decide what type of coverage you want. Most retailers offer a variety of shades, ranging from a clear tint to complete blackout. Opt for a clear low-reflectivity coverage if you want heat reduction and UV blockage without obscuring outdoor views. Use high-reflective metallic tints in bronze or silver if you want privacy and maximum heat reflection. Films that absorb most of the incoming light are good for baby rooms, bedrooms or photo darkrooms. Order samples from the retailer to find the best product for your coverage needs.

3. Determine how much product you need. If you prefer sheets that are pre-cut to your specifications, make a list of all areas you will be covering so that you know which windows to measure. For larger areas, consider buying tint by the roll where you can make cuts yourself. Rolls usually come in widths of 20 to 72 inches and lengths of 10 to 100 feet. Aim to fill an entire window pane with a continuous sheet to avoid unsightly seams.

4. Use a steel tape measure to find the width and height of a window. Measure left to right from the center of the window to find the width. Measure top to bottom from the center of the window to find the height. Round all measurements to the nearest 1/8 inch. Add 1 inch to each measurement to allow for overlap. (Note: some companies will automatically add on for overlap. Follow their directions when ordering.)

5. Include film application tools and supplies when ordering. Most retailers sell a separate kit which includes everything needed to properly apply window tint. Make sure your supplies include application solution with a pump spray bottle, a razor knife, a 4- to 5-inch wide rubber squeegee, and low-lint cloths or rags.

Tips & Warnings

• For windows that are round, half round or other odd shapes, measure the width and length from the centers as if they were rectangular. Some retailers have an online tool that allows you to specify the shape of your window for a custom fit.
