How to Repaint Wrought Iron Railing
Wrought iron railings add distinction to any home. The variance in style and color give each railing a one-of-a-kind appearance. Things You'll Need
- Scrub brush
- Mild liquid detergent
- Bucket
- Cloth
- Garden hose
- Wire brush
- Medium-grit sandpaper
- Metal primer spray
- Rust resistant metal spray paint

Removing the Rust

Wash the railing with mild dishwashing liquid and water. Add ¼ cup of dishwashing liquid to 1 gallon of water. Rinse the railing with a garden hose.

Brush the wrought iron railing with a wire brush. Concentrate on areas with rust or rust pitting damage. Use sandpaper to remove as much of the old paint as possible. Wipe the railing with a damp cloth.

Spray the rusted areas with a metal primer. Repeat a few times to help fill any indented portions that have heavy rust damage. Spray the entire wrought iron railing with primer, and allow 2 or 3 hours for the surface to dry.

Spray the railing with a rust resistant exterior paint. Wait at least 2 hours between coats if it needs more than one. Allow 24 to 48 hours to dry and cure.
