Instructions

  1. Removing the Rust

    • 1

Wash the railing with mild dishwashing liquid and water. Add ¼ cup of dishwashing liquid to 1 gallon of water. Rinse the railing with a garden hose.

    • 2

Brush the wrought iron railing with a wire brush. Concentrate on areas with rust or rust pitting damage. Use sandpaper to remove as much of the old paint as possible. Wipe the railing with a damp cloth.

    • 3

Spray the rusted areas with a metal primer. Repeat a few times to help fill any indented portions that have heavy rust damage. Spray the entire wrought iron railing with primer, and allow 2 or 3 hours for the surface to dry.

    • 4

Spray the railing with a rust resistant exterior paint. Wait at least 2 hours between coats if it needs more than one. Allow 24 to 48 hours to dry and cure.
