How to Clean Accordion Storm Shutters
Aluminum accordion storm shutters can withstand hurricane force winds. Nothing could be worse than waiting for an approaching storm only to find out that the tracks or locking mechanism will not work on your shutters due to dirt clogs. Cleaning the storm shutters is roughly a two-hour job. This small do-it-yourself project could make all the difference in providing personal safety and protection of property from storm damage. Sweep out the roll-on tracks of the accordion storm shutters with a broom. Wipe them with a damp cloth. Check that the locking mechanism is free of dirt and in good working order.

Mix ¼ cup of liquid dishwashing detergent with a bucket of water. Close the shutters to allow access to clean the entire surface.

Wipe the shutters from top to bottom with a sponge soaked in the detergent and water solution. Allow areas to soak for 5 minutes that have bugs or debris stuck on them. Re-wipe and rinse with a garden hose. Windows or sliding doors must be opened to access the inside of the shutter doors for cleaning. Allow 2 or 3 hours for the accordion shutters to completely dry before rolling them back into their neutral position.

Tips & Warnings

Do not use any harsh chemicals or abrasives on aluminum.
