How to Transfer NetZero Internet to a New Computer

A flash drive helps immensely in transferring software and other files between computers.

NetZero is an Internet service provider that offers a plan for 10 hours of free dial-up Internet service per month. They also offer accelerated unlimited dial-up plans as well as DSL (digital subscriber line) Internet plans. NetZero's Internet access program that is required to access its services is available for download online. However, when dealing with a new computer that does not yet have the NetZero software installed (and thus does not yet have Internet access), it is impossible to get online and download the software to the computer's hard disk. If you know how to transfer the NetZero software to this new computer, the computer transition will be much simpler.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer with Internet access
  • CD or DVD writers or USB ports on both computers
  • Writable CD or DVD or a USB drive (also known as a "flash drive" or "thumb drive")

Instructions

    • 1

Using a computer that already has Internet access, download the NetZero Software (see "NetZero Installation File" in Resources). You will need to sign in with your current NetZero username and password before being allowed to save the software to your computer. Follow the first two steps of instructions provided on the NetZero website in order to download the program. When you have finished with step 2 on the NetZero website, be sure to click the "Save" button instead of the "Run" or "Open" button on the window that will appear. Save the file to your desktop to make things easier later.

Insert the blank, writable CD or DVD into the CD or DVD writer of the computer that you just saved the NetZero software to, or insert the USB drive into the USB port. (USB ports are slots on your computer that are about 2/3 of an inch wide and 1/3 of an inch tall. They are usually found on the front or back of a computer tower or on the sides or back of a laptop.) Transfer the NetZero software file that you saved to the computer's desktop to your CD, DVD or USB drive. The process for doing this can be different depending on your specific computer and operating system.

On a Macintosh computer, there will be an icon (a small picture representing a file or drive) that appears on your desktop representing your USB drive or blank CD/DVD. Simply click and drag the NetZero software icon that should also be on your desktop to the USB drive or CD/DVD icon. After just a few seconds, the file should be transferred.

On a Windows computer, double-click on the "Computer" or "My Computer" icon that will either be on your desktop or Start menu. Here you will find the icon representing your USB drive or CD/DVD writer. Double click the USB drive or CD/DVD drive icon. Drag your NetZero software file from the desktop into the new window that appears. (NOTE: some computers do not support the ability to drag files directly to a CD/DVD drive. Consult your computer's documentation to determine the best way to get the file onto the CD or just purchase a USB drive if the computer you're using has a USB port.)

Remove the CD/DVD or USB drive from the first computer after the NetZero file is completely transferred. Before removing a USB drive, you may need to right-click on the USB drive icon and select "Stop/Remove Hardware." This will help you avoid data loss.

Insert the CD/DVD or USB drive into the new computer. Access the CD/DVD drive or USB drive the same way you accessed them before. Open the NetZero file that should now be saved there, and follow the instructions to complete the installation process. Be sure your new computer's modem is connected to a working phone jack, then click on the NetZero icon that should now be on the new computer's desktop. The NetZero software will guide you through setting up your existing Internet account on your new computer. You should shortly have Internet access.

Tips & Warnings

  • You should have your computer documentation and instructions available for reference as well as your CD/DVD writer or USB drive instructions.
