1
Select the right shade of red eyeshadow. This can depend on both your skin tone and style. A lighter shade of red can be a good choice for just about anyone. A darker shade of red tends to look best on those who have darker skin. Although a vibrant fire engine red can look good on many people, it is not something that you would wear if you do not want to stand out. Maroon is a color in the red family that can be a more subtle eyeshadow choice.

2
Choose other eyeshadow colors to wear with red. Red eyeshadow looks best when worn with about two other colors. Two great options are black and charcoal. If you are planning to wear a lighter shade of red eyeshadow, you may be able to wear it with shades of pink, orange or purple. Experiment to see what looks right with the shade of red eyeshadow that you are using.

Create a smoky eyeshadow appearance. First use the lightest color, which will probably be the charcoal eyeshadow. Dust across the entire lid and to the brow bone. Across the crease of the eye, apply the second darkest color, which will probably be the red. Use the darkest eyeshadow color, which will probably be black, on the light of the eye. Blend each color into the next to give it a smoky appearance.

4
Consider an alternative to the smoky eyeshadow appearance. Use the lightest eyeshadow color to dust the entire lid and brow bone. Sweep the red eyeshadow about halfway across the lid, beginning closest toward the nose. Halfway into the lid, begin blending the darkest eyeshadow color. Swoop it across the rest of the lid, and create a slight upward wing off the end of the lid.

5
Always wear black eyeliner when you wear red eyeshadow. Create a slightly thicker line of eyeliner than you normally would. Also consider dusting on some charcoal or red eye shadow just beneath the eyeliner. Because you are going for a slightly more drastic look by choosing red eyeliner, you will want to create a more drastic eyeliner appearance as well.
