How to Obtain a Work Permit Visa in Canada

Though most U.S. citizens can enter Canada with a American passport, you will need to obtain a Canadian work permit before you can start a job at a Canadian business in most cases. Fortunately, if you meet minimum requirements and obtain a job offer in advance, the process for temporarily living and working in Canada can be simple.

Obtain a valid passport if you are a U.S. citizen. You can apply for a passport and have passport photos taken at your local post office. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you might need to obtain a Canadian Temporary Resident Visa before entering Canada or before applying for a work permit. Visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website to find out about requirements in your country of origin.

Check whether you will be required to obtain a work permit to work in Canada. Some occupations are exempt from the work permit requirement, but will still require a valid passport or Temporary Resident Visa.

    • 3

Obtain a letter confirming that you have been offered employment from a Canadian business. This letter should be written by a representative from the company offering employment.

    • 4

Check whether a labor market opinion from Human Resources and Social Development Canada is required for your profession. If an opinion is required, have your prospective employer contact HRSDC directly to complete a job offer form to request an opinion. The opinion will be given based on several factors including the availability of Canadian workers in that occupation, wages offered and the potential regional benefits of foreign workers in your occupation.

Obtain proof that you are qualified to complete the job you intend to take. This can be a resume outlining your educational and professional background or experience. You also will need proof that you have enough money to support yourself, as well as any family members, during your stay in Canada.
