How to Clean Copper Pans
Copper cookware is prized due to its ability to conduct heat better than many other materials. When copper cookware is not cared for properly, it can become discolored and eventually may lose its ability to conduct heat with as much efficiency. Copper cookware should be cleaned by hand. Do not use abrasives or sharp implements. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Sponge
- Dish soap
- Baking soda
- Ketchup
- 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar
- 2 tbsp. coarse salt
- Soft cloth

Wash the copper by hand with a sponge and dish soap. Use baking soda for any substance that is stuck to the pan.

If the copper in discolored, spread ketchup on the entire surface.

Allow the ketchup to sit for 10 minutes. Wipe it off and rinse the pot.

Mix 1/4 cup white vinegar and 2 tbsp. coarse salt in a bowl. Use a soft cloth to buff the copper pan with the salt and vinegar until it shines.

Tips & Warnings
Instead of salt, you can also use flour to buff the pan. Use enough flour to make a paste with the vinegar. Lemon juice can be substituted for the vinegar.
If the baking soda doesn't remove the hardened food, let the dish soak in water. The ketchup and the white vinegar mixture prevent the copper from becoming discolored. It you don't have time to apply both, at least apply one regularly.
