Odors in Tupperware and other plastic containers can seep into foods that are stored in them. Odors stay in the containers for the same reason that tomato products stain them: The plastic is porous. It can absorb and trap flavors and food particles. Just as airing out a container won't remove the stain, it may not remove the odor. There are a few tricks for removing odors from Tupperware and other plastic containers.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sponge
  • Dish soap
  • Bleach
  • Charcoal briquette
  • Baking soda
  1. Step 1

Use a sponge and dish soap and wash the container by hand.

  2. Step 2

Pour or spray undiluted bleach into the container and work it over the entire surface of the container, including the lid. Rinse out the bleach.

  3. Step 3

If there is still a lingering smell, allow the container to dry and place a charcoal briquette in the container. Seal the container.

  4. Step 4

After three days, check the container. If the smell still lingers, remove the briquette. Fill the container with baking soda. Seal the container.

  5. Step 5

Unseal the container after a week has passed. The smell will be gone.

Tips & Warnings
  • If there was mold in the container, seal bleach or undiluted white distilled vinegar in it for a few days to ensure that mold cannot regrow. Apple peels sealed in a plastic container can also remove odors. If the container is not transparent, label it so that you don't accidentally open it before the right time.
  • Use caution when handling undiluted bleach. One drop can discolor clothes.
