How to Use Digital Zoom on the Nikon 5200

The Nikon Coolpix 5200 was released in 2004 and has a digital zoom to 4x. It's generally a good idea to use the optical zoom whenever possible because it will provide higher quality images than the digital zoom. In digital zoom, data from the image sensor is processed digitally, and digital zoom does not increase the detail. But when you just have to get that long-range shot, the digital zoom on this camera will work just fine.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Turn the camera on.

  2. Step 2

Hold the camera steady and look through the viewfinder or use the monitor. Frame the shot. Keep your fingers clear of the lens.

  3. Step 3

Press the zoom. The zoom control is located at the top right of the back of the camera. You will see a rocker-type lever labeled with a "W" and a "T." Press the "W," which stands for wide angle, to zoom out from the subject, and press "T," which stands for telephoto, to zoom in. The zoom will take place in optical mode until it reaches its maximum magnification.

  4. Step 4

Keep the zoom control pressed for a further two seconds, and the digital zoom will trigger. The zoom indicator will turn yellow, and the green light next to the viewfinder will flash.

  5. Step 5

    Take the shot.
