Things You'll Need:
- Afternoon to try on multiple pairs
- New socks
-
Step 1
TRY ON
Always take sufficient time and effort to try on various boots in several sizes and widths. If the store doesn't have your size, keep looking! Ask them to call around for you or order the proper size, but don't buy the wrong size.
It's always best to try your boots on after a day of regular activity. By this time your feet will be swollen to the degree they normally would be. This helps to ensure that your boots won't be to tight by the end of a day's wear. -
Step 2
ROOM FOR TOES
Check to be sure that your toes have room in the boot. This is especially necessary if your boots have high heels. Ideally, if you slide your foot as far forward in the boot as possible, you'll have 1/4 to 1/2" of space behind your heel.
On the other hand, don't buy a boot with too much room inside. This will cause your foot to slide around increasing the tendency for blistering. Additionally, if the boot is too big, you may notice an uncomfortable crease across the top of your toes when you walk. -
Step 3
WIDTH
Depending on your foot and leg shape, you may need to try on wide size boots or boots with wide calf room. These are much easier to find than they used to be. You may have to order boots on the internet, but be sure to shop with a store that allows returns and pays for return shipping. -
Step 4
SOCKS
Last, but not least, you should always buy new socks when you buy new boots. New socks with proper padding and wicking capabilities will improve the comfort of your boots substantially. Even if you wear panty hose or tights, it's best to wear comfortable socks as well for the sake of comfort.
