Have you ever stopped in the hardware aisle in your local home improvement store and just took the time to look at all the different cabinet pulls and knobs they have in stock. This can be a daunting experience if you are intent on replacing your existing pulls or knobs or installing this hardware on new or existing cabinets that lack pulls or knobs. Once you decide whether you will use a pull or a knob, then you need to select the material of which the knobs or pulls will be made. Now we need to decide on the color you would like to use. With these decisions made you will need to measure the distance between the holes in an existing cabinet door if you choose to replace the existing cabinet pulls. Armed with this knowledge, you are now ready to head to the local home improvement store and purchase and bring home the correct number of cabinet pulls that you need.

While cabinet pulls or knobs come in as many different colors and styles as you could imagine, the installation is basically the same no matter the style.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cabinet pulls
  • Drill and bits
  • Tape measure
  • Screwdriver
  1. Step 1

If replacing existing cabinet pulls in your cabinet doors, simply unscrew the screws holding the old pulls, remove them and install the new pulls. Sometimes the screws that come with new pulls are either too long or too short. If this is the case, you will need to either purchase screws of the correct length or if your screws are too long, you can cut them to the correct length using a pair of electrician's pliers.

  2. Step 2

If you are installing new cabinet pulls in new cabinet doors, then determine where the new pulls will go on the door and measure the distance from the bottom or top of the cabinet where the first hole will be and make a mark. Then measure from that hole the correct distance to the other hole and make a mark.

  3. Step 3

Now measure the distance from the side of the door and make a mark equal to the distance you desire the pull to be placed. If you have several of these pulls to install, I suggest you take the time to build a jig to use which will make the installation on additional doors go much faster and easier.

  4. Step 4

Once your holes are measured and marked, determine the correct size hole to drill by locating a drill bit of equal size to the screws. Now you are ready to drill the holes for your new cabinet pulls.

  5. Step 5

Now that your holes are drilled, remove the cabinet pull from the package and attach to the cabinet door utilizing the screws that came with the pulls or the screws you purchased. Repeat these steps for each of the new or replacement cabinet pulls and you will have a job well done.
