How to Be a Male Model

Male models need to build portfolios.

Models show or promote clothes, products or services and pose for artwork. Although female models make more headlines, male models are beginning to receive just as much attention in the fashion industry. Male models pose for images displayed on books, advertisements, magazines and TV. Types of modeling men can do include fashion, glamour, fitness and body-part (like hands) modeling. The world of male modeling is competitive and exciting.

Instructions

1. Know why you want to be a model. Potential modeling agencies and clients will want to know this about you. Keep in mind that modeling is more than just wearing nice clothes and having your picture taken. Consider the unglamorous parts of the male modeling world when thinking about your reasons for pursuing a career in this field.

2. Get headshots taken. Headshots are close-up photographs that show how you look naturally. The back of your headshot should include information about you: name, address, email address, website (if applicable), phone number(s), height, measurements (chest, waist and hips), clothing sizes and shoe size.

3. Find representation. Find a modeling or talent agency that represents male models. Big-name agencies will have casting calls periodically that will require you to go to the agency's office in person. The scouts will ask you questions, look at your pictures and ask you to walk around the room for them.

4. Build your portfolio. A portfolio is a photo album you show potential clients. It acts as a resume. Include all of your best pictures, pictures that have appeared in catalogs and pictures taken for magazines in your portfolio.

5. Establish clients. New male models must first meet with potential clients in person, like a job interview. Follow their instructions on what to wear. Act professional and friendly; attitude goes a long way in this business. Tyra.com states that you should never be forgettable. Be clean-shaven, have a clean face and clean hair. After you have established a base of clients, it will be easier to find more clients nationally.

Tips & Warnings

• Do not get discouraged if you get rejected by a modeling agency. This happens to the best male models. Do not take the rejection personally. Instead, view it as a chance to find a better agency to represent you. Campus Men states that befriending a professional photographer can help you get in to a good modeling agency.

• According to the AMA, male models should be at least 6 feet tall and have a 40-inch chest and an inseam of 33 inches. You should take care of your skin so it looks clear and have nice hands, nails, teeth and hair.

• Never pay anyone to work for them. According to the AMA, scam-modeling agencies often ask their clients for money to secure clients or modeling classes. People should pay you to work for them, not the other way around.
