Adversity teaches us the truth about ourselves
Adversity teaches us the truth about ourselves

There are some people in this world who were born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Great things just seem to be handed to them and they have never

had to wonder where their next meal was going to come from, or if they were going to have to pay the rent or the utility bill this month. If you are one

of these people, then there is nothing in this article to interest you.

But if you are like me and have had many personal struggles in life, I may have a bit of insight for you.

Adversity is something that many of us deal with on a daily basis, and if you get hit day after day it can be depressing. I am here today to tell you that

things can and do get better and hopefully give you a few tools to put into your life toolbox that may help you keep your focus and look forward to the

future.

They say god looks after children and fools, I guess I have been both because the angel that sits on my shoulder has had to work overtime on many

occasions!

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Build the correct mindset. Sometimes getting and maintaining your focus in the face of adversity is a harder task than actually dealing with the

    problem in the first place.
Develop the mindset that no matter how bad things may look, you will survive. That which does not kill us makes us stronger! With some work and

dedication you can overcome adversity. Seek out those people who can help. Sometimes the hardest part is overcoming our pride and actually asking

for help. There are a number of community resources to help people with a variety of problems, all you have to do is decide to seek them out and use

    them to your advantage!

  2. Step 2

Break things down into little bite sized pieces. The smaller you can break a big problem down, the less ominous it will appear and the more likely it

will be that you will be able to beat it down, get things done and get it out of the way.

Sometimes the solution does not appear to be obvious. Get creative and look for alternative answers to help deal with an unusual or large problem.

  3. Step 3

Do not feel sorry for yourself! This is totally self destructive and will only lead you to naught! Overcoming adversity takes real work and a

determination to succeed. If you are homeless ask local churches about shelters, contact the Salvation army, you may have to prove that you are not a

drug addict or alcoholic to get help from some programs, but the programs to help are out there! There are usually several food banks and clothing

banks within the community, find them and utilize them. Emergency assistance may be applied for through the states welfare offices and they can help

you find other community resources that may help you. There are programs to pay for childcare for low income families so that you can find work, and

many even offer assistance to help you with training or job placement assistance. Depending on your situation you may also qualify for financial

assistance or food stamps. The point here is to LOOK for these things as they will not just present themselves to you!

Tips & Warnings
  • Nobody is going to do things for you, you have to pick yourself up and be your own advocate!
  • Be thankful for the angels along your way, there are people who genuinely care and do go out of their way to help. Never forget to thank them!
  • If you have a roof over your head, be thankful
  • If you have food in the freezer and refrigerator, be thankful
  • If your utilities are paid this month, be thankful
  • If you have money in the bank, be thankful
  • If you are reading this online, be thankful because the one who needs to read this the most, does not have computer access!
  • Try to avoid the victim mentality! This is only making excuses.
