How to Use Essential Oils for Congestion: Sinus and Chest

Essential oils are very effective in treating congestion when applied through bath, vaporization, or steam inhalation. There are several essential oils listed below that work well for treating congestion. Of these essential oils, eucalyptus is most commonly used.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Choose one of the following essential oils:

    Eucalyptus
    Frankincense
    Peppermint
    Myrrh
    Benzoin
    Elecampane
    Pine
    Cedarwood
    Sage
    Sandalwood

  2. Step 2

    Vaporizer Method

    Put 10 drops of the essential oil into the water tank or medicine tray of a vaporizer. Run the vaporizer at night to help with congestion.

  3. Step 3

    Stove Method

    Bring 4 cups of water to a slow boil on the in a saucepan. The water should be steaming, but not boiling rapidly. Place 10 drops of essential oil into the water and inhale the steam, being careful not to burn yourself.

  4. Step 4

    Bathtub Method

    This method works well for young children. Fill a bathtub full of water that is as warm as tolerable. Place 10 to 20 drops of the chosen essential oil into the bath water. Remain in the tub until breathing improves.

Tips & Warnings
  • A diffuser can also be used for dispersing essential oils into the air for congestion, but candle diffusers can cause indoor air pollution that should be avoided when having respiratory difficulties.
