How to Compress Video Files Using Microsoft Windows Movie Maker
Video files take up a lot of space on your computer's hard drive. And they also take a long time to upload. But if you compress video files, you will save disk space and uploading time. You can use Microsoft Windows Movie Maker to compress video files. The application is included with Windows Me, XP and Vista. But if you're using Windows 7, you can get a free download within the Windows Live suite.

Download and install the appropriate version of Microsoft Windows Movie Maker if you don't already have it.

Launch Movie Maker by navigating to the "Start" menu and selecting "All Programs" and "Windows Movie Maker."

Select your video then click "Import." Your video now appears within the Movie Maker program.

Click the video file. The video is subsequently highlighted in blue. Then drag-and-drop the video into the timeline.

From the "File" menu, select "Save Movie File." Then select "My Computer" if it's not already highlighted. Click "Next."

Enter the name of your video file. Choose where you want to save it. Then click "Next." A new window appears.

Select "Show More Choices." Then select "Other Settings." A menu box will appear. Select the desired setting. You can choose from: Video for Broadband (512 kbps), Video for Broadband (340 kbps), or Video for Broadband (150 kbps). The "Video for Broadband (150 kbps)" option will give the most compressed video.

Click "Next." Movie Maker automatically starts saving your video file. When it's done saving, click "Finish." You video is compressed and ready for upload.

Tips & Warnings
Windows Movie Maker for Windows XP imports and supports the following video and movie file formats: Video files (.asf, .avi, .wmv.); Movie files (MPEG1, .mpeg, .mpg, .m1v, .mp2).
Windows Movie Maker for Windows XP saves videos/movies in the following formats: Windows Media video files (.wmv), Windows Media audio files (.wma), and DV/AVI format for video (.avi).
I used Windows XP for this article tutorial. Windows Movie Maker instructions for VISTA may be slightly different.

It don't compress the file in itself, it becomes smaller because you decrease the quality of the video. I have tried a lot of programs to change video format and most of them increase the size of the video as a result of primitive programming. It should be possible to compress these videos with intelligent programs, and there should be such programs out there. Besides that, Movie Maker is a good program for what it's made for.
