Step 1
Pick out and get your Guinea Pig as young as possible. The earlier you can get the animal, the easier it will be for you to separate her from other Guinea Pigs and begin building a bond yourself. I have found that an animal that is kept alone is much more receptive to human interaction than one that is kept with one or more other Guinea Pigs. Only keep the animal isolated if you plan on giving a lot of attention yourself to your pet. All pets need interaction and a Guinea Pig is no exception.

Step 2
Hold your animal often. Beginning at a very young age, handle your pet enough so that she gets used to being held. If you don’t hold the pet early on, she will be uncomfortable in your hands. Reward her for sitting calmly with you or for behaving while out of the cage. Brush her often and give her regular baths and keep her nails and teeth trimmed.

Step 3
Allow your Guinea Pig out of her cage often. The more she is out of the cage, the less she will want to run when let out. Again begin slowly at a young age with her by letting her explore her surroundings a little at a time. By always having chew toys available, you will prevent the animal from chewing on your furniture.
