How to Perform a Repair Install of Windows XP
Sometimes when a Windows PC can't boot, the only solution might be to completely reinstall the operating system. Before you do that, however, it's a good idea to try a Repair Install. This process will keep your current system---including your documents and your software---in tact while attempting to restore your Windows system to usability. And the best part is that it's not that difficult to do.

1
Backup your data. While a Repair Install is generally quite safe, it's always a good idea to perform a backup before making major changes to your system. Move files you can't afford to lose to a thumb (flash) drive or similar external storage media.
-
2
Insert your Windows CD into your computer's CD drive and reboot. When you see the the message "Press any key to boot from CD," do so to continue booting.

Click through all the dialogue boxes until you are presented with the option to "Setup Windows XP Now." Press "Enter" but do not press "R" to bring up the recovery console. Press "F8" to agree with the license agreement, after which you can press "R" to "repair Windows XP."

Follow the prompts on screen to complete the Repair Install. The actual process will not differ much from a traditional installation, but will ensure your system includes all components that Windows needs in order to function properly.
