How to Clean Rust on Outside of Camper Trailer

Camper trailers make camping fun and more comfortable. However, like all other vehicles, they must be maintained to function properly and to protect the finish and paint. One of the most common problems with older camper trailers is the formation of rust. Although not difficult to treat, it is imperative that rust be removed immediately, because it can cause extensive damage to the appearance as well as the functioning parts of a camper trailer.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the rusted area of the camper until it is all removed. You will see shiny, silver metal underneath once all of the rust is gone.

    • 2

Apply a rust neutralizer. These products seal the metal to prevent rust from reforming and are available anywhere automotive supplies are sold.

    • 3

If the area of rust is large, check on the reverse side of the metal to make sure that the rust has not eaten all the way through. If you see any discoloration or rust on the reverse side, treat it the same way.

    • 4

Repaint the repaired area to match the color of the camper or take it to a body shop and have them repaint it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Treat rust as soon as it first appears to prevent extensive damage. If the rust has eaten a hole through the metal, you must replace that section of the camper trailer. To prevent rust, keep the camper well waxed and in storage when not in use.
