How to Make an Easy DNA Molecule Model
Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a spiral-shaped molecule that contains all of the genetic information necessary to make a person like you. It stores the data that determines the traits your children have when they inherit your genetic code. DNA is made up of two strands of nucleotides. All sorts of genes piggyback on the DNA spiral known as a helix. You can use your creative genes to make a DNA model you'll be proud to show off.
Things You'll Need
- Photo or drawing of a DNA helix
- 1 long tube-shaped balloon
- Pipe cleaners, chenille stems or crafting wire
- Assorted plastic beads (cylinder-shaped and round)
Instructions

1
Blow up a long balloon to create a temporary form around which your DNA helix model will be built.
-
2
Decide between using long pieces of wire or joined lengths of pipe cleaners (also known as chenille stems) as your model base. Thread craft beads onto either type of wire. Make your own pattern up in colors you like, alternating long with round beads until your wire is completely covered with the beads.

3
Continue to thread craft beads on your wire until it measures at least twice the length of the balloon plus a little extra. Tie off the ends so no beads escape from the wire. Fold your long, bead-studded strand in half before you start wrapping the beaded wire around the balloon. Tuck the ends of the wire into the top and bottom circles so your model doesn't start unraveling.

4
Cut bunches of short wire or pipe cleaner pieces to make the ladder-like sections you see on the photo you've chosen as your DNA model reference picture. Use the width of your balloon as a guide to figure out how long each ladder piece should be (your measurement will probably be around four inches). Add beads to each ladder step. Leave a little bit of exposed wire on either end so you can attach these small pieces to your helix shape.
-
5
Remove the balloon from the center of the spiral, pull the two sections of beaded wire apart and start inserting the ladder sections between the two beaded frames you've created. Use your hands to model your project so it looks like your picture. Remember that wire is flexible, so if you put a couple of pieces in the wrong place, you can always readjust your model until it looks perfect.

Tips & Warnings
Make your model more accurate by using bead colors that represent the actual elements of a typical DNA helix.
