Security camera systems used to be expensive and difficult, but with the advent of the Internet and the ubiquity of inexpensive and versatile webcams, almost anyone is now able to install her own system. While anyone considering this project should be aware of some important legal considerations before installing security cameras, the process is simple and straightforward.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a UStream account. UStream.tv is an Internet streaming video service that allows you to stream live video that you can view from any Internet-enabled computer. Creating an account is free and only requires an e-mail address. You must be at least 13 years old.

    • 2

Create a show. In your UStream.tv account, click on the "My Shows" tab and create a new show. The name of your show must be unique, so add a few numbers that you will remember to the end of your show's name. You are also required to upload a logo, select a category, choose a few tags and enter a show description. These last areas are not necessary for security camera purposes, so feel free to enter random text into these fields.

    • 3

Install a webcam. Your webcam must be plugged into the computer or server from which you will broadcast your security feed. A wireless USB hub or USB extension cord may be useful if you are unable to position your webcam and computer in your preferred locations.

    • 4

Click "Broadcast." Your stream will now be available from any Internet-enabled computer. Navigate to http://ustream.tv/channel/Your_Stream's_Name to view a live feed.

    • 5

Password-protect your feed. While this step is optional, setting up a password for your feed will prevent unauthorized users from viewing your security camera's video. Click on the "Advanced" tab in your stream's options and enter a password. Anyone who views your feed will now be prompted to enter the password you have selected.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a webcam with a short focal length (wide field of view). While this may distort your image slightly, you will also be able to see much more of the area you intend to surveil.

  • Be aware of the laws of your state regarding surveillance cameras. While it is usually permissible to install a security camera in your own home, cameras that can see others' private areas may be illegal.
