To operate a business in the state of New Jersey, you will need a tax identification number. This number will allow the state to register your business for tax purposes and employer contributions for disability and unemployment benefits. Register your business first with the state of New Jersey's Department of Treasury. You can do this step online through the department's website. You need to distinguish the type of business entity as well as the proposed name of the business. Once you register, you can proceed to apply for the tax identification number.

Visit the State of New Jersey Online Tax/Employer Registration Web page. From this site, you can fill out an online application to obtain your tax identification number. To start, enter your Social Security number to proceed to the application.

Give some basic information about your business. Fill in owner's name, business location, date business started, type of business and the county in New Jersey that the business will operate in.

Provide co-ownership information. If there are other partners invested, you need to give their information as well to apply for a tax identification number.

Receive your FEIN after your application has gone through online processing. The FEIN stands for your Federal Employer ID Number, and will be used by your business for all tax-related activities.
