The Windows XP error "Cannot Move File or Folder - The Directory or File Cannot be Created" is an annoying one because the windows system doesn't give you much information to help you fix the problem. However, this How To will get you on your way to correctly copying your files.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First, check to make sure you have enough disk space on the device you're trying to move the files to. If you don't have enough space, you'll probably be all set after you clear some.

  2. Step 2

If that doesn't work, try creating another file folder on the device you're trying to copy the files to, then copy the files into the new folder instead.

Sometimes storage devices get finicky if there are too many files in one folder or if the file names are too long. Copying the files into another folder on the same device can get around this issue.

  3. Step 3

One of those two should correct the error in most cases. If not, you can always try restarting the computer, which might free up random access memory that is preventing the file from being moved.

Tips & Warnings
  • Most often, step 2 will be the one that fixes this error.
