Step 1
Prepare ahead of time for the arrival of your cat to your home. Make sure your home will be welcoming to your new cat. Clean your home before you bring your new cat home. Have clean water, food, and a clean litter box waiting for your cat when you bring him or her home form the animal shelter.
-
Step 2
Be aware that your cat might be frightened when you bring him or her to your home. After you let them out of the cat carrier it is normal for your new cat to run under the bed or hide from you. Let your cat be able to hide for a while if that is what they want to do. If they are hungry or need to use the restroom they will come out eventually. Give your cat the space they need!
-
Step 3
If possible, try to stay with your cat for the next day or two to bond with them. If this is not possible try to have someone at your home to keep your cat company.
-
Step 4
Provide your new cat with toys to play with and a scratching post. A cat bed is a good, comfort object to provide your new cat. It will provide them a safe place to rest.
