Do you consistently fail to execute a proper chip shot by either hitting the ball fat or thin? Do you struggle to keep your chip shots on line even when you do hit one crisp?

The fix is easy. Chipping is a specialty technique and to execute the proper chip shot, you must rearrange your setup position in order to hit crisp, straight shots along your target line.

Follow and practice the steps below to learn how to execute on-target chip shots and increase your chipping consistency.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wedge
  • Golf Ball
  • Putting Green
  1. Step 1

Go to your favorite practice green and take your putter and a wedge from your golf bag. Sole the wedge on the ground and then sole the putter right next to it.

The shaft angle of the putter will more upright than that of the wedge.

  2. Step 2

Raise the wedge towards the toe, lifting the heel off the ground until the shaft angle of the wedge matches the shaft angle of the soled putter.

Steepening the wedge's shaft angle decreases the swing arc which will allow you to hit more on-target chip shots.

  3. Step 3

Drop the putter out of the way and address your body to the wedge. Stand closer to the ball with your feet together and weight on the front foot (which will encourage hitting down on the ball).

  4. Step 4

Start the swing by smoothly swinging back as if you are going to putt the ball. -Remember the wedge's shaft is now just as upright as the putter's shaft.

  5. Step 5

The forward swing should be similar to the backswing. Make a smooth forward putting stroke through the ball. Both the backswing and forward swing should be equidistant.

  6. Step 6

The ball should pop onto the green and land a few yards into the green and then roll on-target.

Tips & Warnings
  • Experiment with different clubs and wedges to produce different carry to roll distances.
  • Hit through the chip shot like a putt and avoid flipping your wrist in an effort to help the ball up into the air.
