Step 1
The first consideration to keep in mind when training your Jack Russell Terrier (JRT) is their strong, terrier temperament. Your JRT will be quick to chase small animals, quick to bark and overall quick to act. They are very high-energy dogs who at times can be bossy, aggressive and territorial. It is your job as the trainer to constantly reinforce that you are the boss and distinguish yourself from them as master and pack leader. The Jack Russell Terrier can be very obedient and loyal, but if you do not assert yourself as their alpha-pack leader then your JRT will learn quickly and behave instinctively as the boss over your household.
-
Step 2
Training a JRT is going to be just the same as training any other dog breed. Repetition, positive reinforcement and routine will signal to your pet the appropriate behavior you expect for them. But, what will be different for your JRT is the vigorous exercise requirements that this small breed dog requires. No matter how much training and progress you make with your Jack, if you do not take them on enough walks then your JRT will become destructive and act out. Bored Jacks tend to act out by relieving themselves on the floor and in areas where they know they shouldn't. When JRT's are not taken out for walks at least a few times each week they will grunt, protest and show their boredom and disapproval any opportunity they find themselves alone. Your Jack is the type of breed that prefers to come along with you everywhere- in cars and around your property. You will discover that your Jack is curious, dedicated and loves to follow you around- even to the bathroom.
-
Step 3
Remaining consistent with your Jack is the best approach to take when training. Don't allow their cuteness to affect your training and disciplinarian approach. A JRT will roll over, playfully place their paws over there eyes or engage in any or all of the behaviors that they know their owners will find too cute to punish. Jacks are very intelligent and will do anything possible to warm your heart so you'll lay off them. But, don't! When training a JRT, it's important that you stay consistent and never allow them a pass on any bad behaviors. If you give them a pass on whatever behavior you are working to discourage, they will continue to 'sneak' and participate in this behavior.
-
Step 4
Once you get past the training and assertion the Jack Russell Terrier can be one of the smartest, athletic and best-behaved dogs. They make excellent pets and even better little watchdogs. If you are a person who is looking for the perfect combination of cuddle factor and toughness, then a Jack is for you. They love to snuggle up on the sofa with you, and enjoy being babied. But, on the other hand, they will vigilantly and passionately work to protect, watch and serve you as a mini-sized companion.
