Go old-school for your next shave.

For men, shaving can be more ritual than routine with the right tools. Leave behind cheap, disposable razors and 99-cent cans of shaving gel in favor of double-edge razors and gylcerin-based shaving cream. Use a shaving brush to prep your face. Using these items can cut down on razor burn and ingrown hairs, as well as deliver a closer shave, according to "The Today Show." The equipment costs more, but the smooth, irritation-free skin left behind will be worth the expense. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Shave right after showering with warm water when the hair is softer. Alternatively, wash your face with warm water before shaving. Fill your bathroom sink with hot water.

    • 2

Dip your shaving brush into the hot water, then into a tub of shaving cream. Brush the cream onto your face in circular motions to loosen the hair and prep the skin. Be sure to cover all areas that you'll be shaving.

    • 3

With the razor, shave downward in the direction of hair growth. Let the razor glide; do not press down. Continue around your whole face and neck, rinsing the razor periodically as it fills with cream.

    • 4

Rinse your face with cool water. Gently pat it dry with a soft towel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to shave in the same direction as the hair growth. Shaving against the grain will cause skin irritations such as razor burn or razor bumps, as well as inflammation and redness.
