Use a little common sense to keep yourself out of trouble.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Concert Tickets
  • Dinner Reservations
  • Movie Tickets
  • Museum Tickets
  • Cellular Phones
  1. Step 1

Meet in public places. If possible, double date or go out with a group of people.

  2. Step 2

Go Dutch. By paying for your portion you won't feel as if you are under any kind of obligation.

  3. Step 3

Remember that alcohol affects your judgment and lessens your inhibitions. If you are drinking, keep your drink in sight at all times.

  4. Step 4

Don't assume just because a person claims to be religious that he's safe.

  5. Step 5

Use your own mode of transportation. Your mom was right - don't ride with strangers. Always have your own ride to and from a date. And leave with a full tank.

  6. Step 6

Arrange to meet your date; don't let him pick you up at home.

  7. Step 7

Be cautious about letting someone know exactly where you live. It's scary to be stalked later if things don't work out.

  8. Step 8

Avoid secluded areas such as beaches and parks.

  9. Step 9

Listen to your gut. If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always let someone else know where you're going and who you'll be with. You might even consider arranging a time to call and check in.

on 8/8/2006 Initially, don't put yourself in potentially risky situations, e.g. inviting a woman back to your place on the first date. Meet in a public places, and let friends know where you are.

on 11/22/2005 Nothing is wrong with having lunch on a first date - daylight is good! Be the first to arrive and anticipate him being early. Get the license plate number from his car if you are meeting for the first time, you may need to tell the police this later if he turns out to be stalker material! Watch your drink! Date rape drugs are out there.
If he's too eager to buy you another drink, he may lack personality and want to inhibit your best judgment.
Tell him you have a roommate and a big dog, even if you don't! Take your cell phone and have a friend call to check on you. This may be a good out if he's scary. Make up a code word to use if something is wrong and you need help. Let them know where you will be ahead of time. Take your pepper spray and extra cash (if you will need a cab). Make sure he doesn't follow you straight home. If he touches you too soon, that may be a bad or desperate sign. If something goes wrong, go up to someone and tell them you're worried and ask if they can walk you to your car. You can ask a bouncer at a club, a group of clean-cut country boys, or a chick in the bathroom. But, do not be afraid to leave!

Worst case scenario if he's attacking you: Bite down on his lower lip and run screaming "Fire!" Or try puking on him, then run!

on 11/22/2005 You are under no obligations, regardless of who pays for the date.

on 11/22/2005 For the getting acquainted conversation: does he ask too many personal questions? want to know exactly where you live, when you told him just the area or neighborhood? does he suggest meeting at a place with an overtly sexual atmosphere like a strip club? This happened to me and a guy friend advised me to stay away from this date.
