How to Make Nonalcoholic Beer

Non-alcoholic beer contains less than 0.5% alcohol by volume (ABV). This is different than alcohol-free beer, which has no alcohol at all. It's made the same way regular beer, then most of the alcohol is removed. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Follow the instructions with your reverse osmosis (RO) filter to clean the filter system for use.

    • 2

Pour the source beer into the RO filter input. Note: you will save both the source beer and the filtered water/sugar/alcohol "waste" product. Do not dispose of the waste product, but collect it in the stainless steel cooking pot.

    • 3

After the RO filter has removed the water/sugar/alcohol waste, put the remaining source beer in a cool, dark location.

    • 4

Heat the collected waste product, uncovered, to approximately 200 degrees F.You do not need to bring this mixture to a boil. Heat for 30 minutes to cook out the alcohol.

    • 5

Mix the now non-alcoholic "waste" back into the filtered beer. The resulting mix should have most of the flavor of "real" beer while having less than 0.5% ABV.

Tips & Warnings

  • Lighter beers lend themselves to this process better than dark beers, where alcohol taste and mouth-feel is part of their complexity.

  • Do not overheat the "waste" mixture during the alcohol distillation step. Returning a scorched mixture to the filtered beer will result in an unpalatable product.
