Instructions

    • 1

Drive to the A90, Circonvallazione Settentrionale, the ring road surrounding Rome. Follow it to the interchange with the A1, Diramazione (branch) Roma Nord. The interchange lies just east of the Tevere (Tiber) River, in Rome's northern suburbs.

    • 2

Follow the A1 north to Firenze (Florence). In open traffic, the trip should take about three to four hours.

    • 3

At Florence, exit the A1 at SP127, Via Giovanni Agnelli. The interchange lies in the southeastern suburbs of the city and is the most convenient for the historic center. Follow this road north as it turns into the Via Marco Polo, then the Ponte a Varlungo. Cross the Arno River, bear left (west) on the Via Enrico de Nicola. Follow the "P" signs for parking lots and garages. Don't try to park in the city center.

If you missed the SP 127, continue to the Certosa exit. Follow the signs for "Centro" until you reach the Porte Romano. There are parking garages (marked with a blue "P") in the vicinity. Or continue and cross the Arno at Ponte Vespucci. Follow the signs for the Piazza della Stazione, the train station, which also offers garage parking.

Tips & Warnings

  • Dial 116 for roadside assistance or 113 for medical emergencies. Avoid driving on the weekends and during the month of August. Most gas stations are closed from noon through the early afternoon. Use "benzine" or "senza piombo" (unleaded) in a non-diesel car. "Gasolio" is diesel fuel. The historic centers of Rome and Florence are largely closed to passenger cars. Plan on parking at the periphery.

  • Always drive on the right if you are not passing. If a car intends to pass you, move well over to the right. Don't ignore flashing lights behind you. Drive slowly and steadily on city streets with pedestrians. Don't slow down or stop unless necessary.
