According to backyardcity.com, pool covers offer many benefits. They keep the pool warm by retaining heat, they keep the pool cleaner by filtering debris such as dirt and leaves, and they keep harmful critters and vermin out. Pool covers also conserve water and reduce the amount of chemicals needed. Solid pool covers can also be used to prevent the tragedy of small children falling into the pool.

Things You'll Need:

  • Pool cover
  1. Step 1

Choose a pool cover from the many types available. The most common pool covers are mesh, solar and vinyl coverings. Mesh covers consist of tightly woven fibers that only allow water and very fine debris to pass through. Mesh covers keep animals and larger debris out and are lightweight and easy to remove. Solar covers, or bubble covers, are basically giant sheets of thick bubble wrap. Solar covers trap heat in and keep the pool warm. Vinyl and insulated vinyl covers are heavier, more durable and tend to last longer.

  2. Step 2

Decide whether you want a manual, semiautomatic or automatic pool cover. Manual pool covers are the least expensive but must be manually put on and taken off during use. Semiautomatic pool covers use an electronically-driven motor to reel and unreel the pool cover. When using a semiautomatic pool cover, someone must be available to pull the cover and guide the process.
Automatic pool covers are usually built into the surrounding area of the pool and can be activated with the push of a button. Though this is the most expensive option available, it provides an added level as security.

  3. Step 3

Purchase and install your new pool cover per the manufacturer's instructions, and enjoy all the benefits it has to offer.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you plan on using an automatic pool cover, speak with your pool builder or specialist beforehand.
