Prepare to toast at a wedding.

Toasting during a wedding requires knowledge of etiquette rules. The time, place, and style of a toast are all things to consider. Wedding toasts typically take place at the reception. The wedding party often reads, memorizes or recites spontaneous toasts. It is important to prepare your toast to prevent being embarrassed by saying the wrong thing. Prepare a toast to give during a wedding to celebrate the symbolic marriage between the bride and the groom.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Outline your speech before you give the toast. Try to form a beginning, middle and an end. Write your thoughts on paper, or recite the outline of your speech in your mind if you want to go with an impromptu approach.

  2. Step 2

Gain everyone's attention before giving your toast. Standing up and talking will not ensure that everyone is paying attention. Wait until everyone has their drinks, and tap your glass with silverware to make a noise that will attract people's attention.

  3. Step 3

Introduce yourself and your relationship to the wedding couple. Face the couple when giving your toast. Speak loud and remember to keep your toast short and to the point.

  4. Step 4

Hold your glass in your hand while speaking to indicate that you will finish your speech with a toast. Incorporate funny jokes, personal stories, and memories into the toast. A toast is personal, and it reflects solely on the bride and the groom.

  5. Step 5

Avoid saying anything negative, bringing up past relationships or bad experiences during your toast. These seem like obvious points, but people do not always think before they speak. Try to keep the toast simple and to the point.

  6. Step 6

End the speech with a congratulatory remark. Wish the newlyweds a happy life together, and close the toast with a statement that will indicate that you are about to give your toast.

  7. Step 7

Raise your glass in the air and point it at the couple. Encourage everyone to toast the newlyweds with you by asking them to "raise their glasses." Slightly tap your glass against their glasses if you are sitting close.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid moving your glass around while speaking or you may spill it.
